I'd been following Martyns music for a number of years before his death. Imagine my surprise in Fopp music shop in Edinburgh coming across one of his early albums and recognising the name on the spine.

I attended the Edinburgh City Music School at Broughton High with Martyn from '85 until he left in '89. The talent that Martyn displayed was often extraordinary though it was impossible to practice if Martyn was playing his pipes anywhere in the immediate vicinity (even with soundproofing(.

He's sadly missed.

Neil

I put Grit on the stereo to lift my spirits, as I got the sad news of my girlfriends grandmothers death this morning. It occured to me that I had no knowlegde of Grit's creator. So after some searching here I am. He must have been one very special. Even when I find out I am 5 years late, and with the death of a loved one, his music still made me happy.

I can't help but to despair when such passion dies.

Martyn's strength and integrity is an example to us all. He helps us to carry on with three devastating cases of cancer in our family recently. Cheers mate, sing on brother.

Five years on? Time really does fly. I've read a lot of tributes to Martyn since he died and come to realise that I'm very privileged to have seen him play live and spent a little time in his company.

My Father in Law was in the next room to Martyn in Fairmilehead hospice in the October and very late at night I had a private conversation with Martyn. I realised very quickly that I was listening to someone very special and I felt happier because of it.

When I listen to his music now it's with a sense of loss and at the same time I find it uplifting.

Our thoughts will be with his Family on Sunday

An Ode to Martyn

I did not know him.
I never had the chance to shake his hand.
I never had the chance to see him play.
He will never know that he touched my soul with his music.
I would like to believe though that I heard a part of his soul in his music.
I heard his joy of life in his songs, then heard his sadness on his final album.
I celebrate his gift to us and lament that it was taken away too soon.
If there is any justice at all in this universe, he will have found peace.

In 1998 I was a DJ at a small radio station doing a traditional world music show when I discovered Bennett’s Bothy Culture in the new arrivals. It was an incredible album, a work of sheer genius that showed me what was possible in world fusion music. Bothy Culture, along with Hendingarna’s Tra, changed my musical direction and ever since I have been immersed in world fusion music. Bennett has always had a special place in my heart.

He was always a step ahead always onto a surprising new idea. Amazing player, rooted, creative, free, politically aware, passionate, visionary, joyful. I wonder what music he would be making now if he was here?! RIP Martyn

..the deer are still in the woods, and the music is still playing.

Martyn's spirit will continue to be an inspiration to those fusing together disparate musical traditions. One music One love.
