I came across Mr. Bennett's music in the late 90s, just as I was started to perform Celtic music in the Southeastern United States. I thought Bothy Culture was amazing, and I often entertained the notion of perhaps one day meeting this man who seamlessly blended so many different forms of music. That notion was made concrete when I finally picked up the album GRIT. I was entranced and began to follow his music a bit more closely. I remember coming across his obituary online the day it was announced -- it was my birthday.
I am deeply saddened by his death. But I take solace in the music he created, and the influence it has had on me.
Cheers, Martyn.

Oh, how terrible we've lost such a talented composer! I came across Bennett's CD "Bothy Culture" in a Canadian record store in 1998. Just today I was thinking about it and dug it up to listen... decided to look the guy up on the net to tell him how much I have enjoyed his music. So unfortunate that I didn't do so sooner. Well, it was lovely that he graced us with his work in his lifetime. Thanks Martyn!

I've got his first self titled album. After reading of his success you may find it hard to believe that I bought the album directly from the man himself out of a suitcase he was carrying when he played a gig at a local pub here in Dunfermline called Tappie Toories. It's an absolutely tiny wee place that fits about 30 - 40 bodies. It was owned at the time by [the now also deceased] local lad Stuart Adamson of Big Country.

At the end of the night myself, Stuart and Martyn had a bit of a banter about Martyn's music. Being a Scottish Nationalist myself I was convinced that Martyn was a kindred spirit...I couldn't have been more wrong. His music had ZERO political motivation but instead was inspired by a love of land and culture and driven on by a need to test convention and stretch the boundaries of the folk tradition.

I consider myself honoured and privileged for our brief encounter.

as a piper myself, martyn's music inspired me in ways that none of my teachers ever did. when i got my copy of bothy culture, it blew me away. the depth of imagination, the feeling, the power of the music, both through his undoubtable gift and by the way he chose to share it with the world. today is the day that i learned of this tradgic loss to us all. to the mother, i know that you must have been so proud to have a son such as he, to his wife, to share a common interest such as music with your lover must have been fantastic and i sincerely am sorry for your loss [even now being 1 year late]. may he rest in peace and continue to inspire all of us now and generations to come. I always thought that the ultimate experience for me as a piper was to jam with martyn, maybe, in the next life, i'll get my chance because without a doubt, martyn is and always will be "the man". god bless you guy.

martyn has been an inspiration to me since i first stumbled across his music a few years ago, I've bought every copy of his albums i could find and given them away to friends, and burned dozens more. his death is a constant reminder to me to make the most of the time i have and to take every chance i get to write and perform, and his life is a reminder of just how much it is possible to accomplish. my deepest condolances to his family and friends.
