I just heard yesterday that martyn has died - i was at the cambridge folk festival where he headlined with HARDLANDS and it was so amazing how the music just grabbed everyone - it was totally unexpected - i had never heard of him before and i think many people were not expecting to hear music like that at the folk fest, but the whole crowd were so uplifted and it was so refreshing and the atmosphere was one of the best i have experienced in my life. I am so glad to read that it meant so much to him also. I always wondered why he was not making new music when hardlands was so amazing - i am now chasing his back catalogue.

Call me slow but I have only just found out about Martyn's death and can only say what a great loss it is to the music world.

I remember seeing Martyn supporting Peter Gabriel many years ago in Brighton and was totally blown away by the music I heard. It was powerful, clever stuff and the whole audience was entranced. I immediately bought the Grit CD and played it just about every day for some time. I have often played it since and having listened again just today I thought I'd see what else he had recently produced. So it was a bit of a shock to hear of his death.

It is very sad that he won't be gracing us with new music.

I only discovered last night that Martyn died 4 years ago - I am still in shock.

I first discovered Martyn by chance in 1995, while I was working in Hungary. Along with my ex wife, I went along to a big posh business event [organised by the British Council] to promote Scottish/Hungarian ties. It was set in a magnificent and huge building with marble everywhere. Everyone was drinking wine and eating canapes. In the middle of all this [though nobody except me seemed to take much notice] was a guy in a kilt, with dreadlocks playing the bagpipes. I was mesmerised by the music.

After he had finished I went over to say how much I had enjoyed his performance. He said that he would be playing a gig in a few days time in Budapest and said we should come along. So we did.

The gig was at a small venue, probably half full. It was just Martyn on stage, playing one instrument at a time, with most of the music pre-recorded as backing. I don't think half of the audience knew quite what to make of him and the music... but gradually the crowd loosened up and he won them over. I thought it was fantastic. It was one of the more memorable nights in my life and I have been a big fan of his music ever since.

I am saddened to read of his death but very grateful to have met him, albeit briefly and very grateful for the many hours of enjoyment he has given in listening to his music.

Thank you Martyn.
